Surjit Mitra set to begin as joint secretary and financial advisor

Vol 6, PW 3 (10 Apr 02) News in Brief

One Shastri Bhawan official closely involved in the disinvestment process will be Surjit Mitra.

On 5th April the prime minister's office 'cleared' the file for Mitra, 50, to take over as joint secretary and financial advisor. We are told the file will now go to the appointments committee of the cabinet and then through the normal bureaucratic channels.

Mitra is expected to move into Room 209-A of Shastri Bhawan by the end of this month. Unusually his name was the only one on a panel proposed by the department of personnel and training.

Evidence, our sources tell us, of his powerful political clout. He fills the vacancy left by the death ofRavi Saxena.

Mitra's present job is planning secretary in the Assam government.
