widely tipped to be the head of the independent Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, when the government sets one up.

Going by the appointment selection criteria, Tripathi would appear to be the most suitable candidate. Before appointing any person as the chairperson or other member from the panel of names decided by the Search Committee, reads an oil ministry recommendation to cabinet dated 15th December, the central government shall satisfy itself that such person has not been associated with the private sector in any capacity and does not have any financial or other interest which is likely to affect prejudicially his functions as chairperson or such other member.

Cabinet has since accepted the ministry recommendation. Tripathi retired on 31st December aged 60.
