GAIL is about to get its youngest-ever marketing director when Bhuwan Chand Tripathi takes over from Dr.

UD Choubey, who is holding additional charge of the post alongside his real job as the company’s CMD. Born on 12th January 1960, Tripathi is only 47, and could (in theory) be marketing director till retirement at 60, assuming he decides to spend the rest of his working life in the state sector and is not poached by the private sector.

Interviews to select a marketing director for GAIL were held on 2nd and 3rd April at the Delhi office of the Public Enterprises Selection Board. Out of the 25 candidates that applied, the PESB selected BC Tripathi and AK Bansal of Bharat Petroleum as the best qualified.

Tripathi is executive director projects at GAIL and was ranked first. Bansal, who is executive director corporate affairs at BPCL, was ranked second.

Most likely, we are told, Tripathi, who is overseeing the laying of the prestigious Dahej to Uran and Dabhol to Panvel pipelines, will secure the job because he was ranked first. Tripathi faced formidable competition from within GAIL.

Twenty-two middle and senior level managers applied for this prestigious job, as did one executive director from Indian Oil and two executive directors from Bharat Petroleum, among them Bansal. Speculation over who would fill this critical position began on 1st February following Dr.

Choubey’s promotion to company CMD from director marketing. Several commentators express surprise at Tripathi’s imminent appointment because his strength is in project execution, not marketing.

“Ever since he joined GAIL in July 1985 as deputy manager,â€‌ says a source, “he has been in projects and never in marketing.â€‌ Others say his undeniable youth tipped the scale in his favour.

Tripathi is already being talked about as a possible future CMD at GAIL when Dr. Choubey retires in July 2009.

Says one senior admirer: “He has not missed a single promotion since he joined GAIL.â€‌
