GAIL begins looking for a new director marketing

Vol 13, PW 2 (02 Jul 09) People & Policy

GAIL will have a new CMD in less than a month when director marketing Bhuwan Chand Tripathi replaces UD Choubey.

Almost simultaneously the search has begun to find someone to fill Tripathi’s soon-to-be vacant seat as director marketing when he becomes CMD on August 1. At 49, Tripathi already has the distinction of being the youngest ever person to become GAIL chairman.

He was also the youngest ever director marketing when selected by the PESB to take over the post in April 2007, coincidentally from Choubey who was also director marketing. “This is only the second time ever that a director marketing will become GAIL chairman,â€‌ we hear.

GAIL insiders tell us it is too early to speculate about who is the favourite. “Most GAIL staffers who are eligible will apply,â€‌ says a source.

“Expect many CVs from outside also.â€‌ Still, industry sources tell us J.

Wasan, executive director marketing, Rajeev Mathur, general manager marketing, and CN Trivedi, executive director and in-charge of GAIL’s petrochemical business are among the promising candidates. Yet others tell us whoever is selected should continue the work culture introduced by Tripathi in the marketing department.

“Tripathi likes consensus,â€‌ says a former colleague. “He wants to involve everyone in the decision-making process.

Let’s hope whoever replaces him has the same approach.â€‌ According to the PESB notice, the director marketing job opens on August 1, 2009 – the same day Tripathi becomes CMD.

Candidates must be at least 45. Other than state-owned employees, joint secretary rank government officials are also eligible, as are private sector candidates working with listed companies with a turnover of Rs100cr or more.

CVs are also invited from army, air force or navy candidates with major general rank or equivalent. August 17 is the deadline.
