More work for Manoj Jain at GAIL

Vol 25, PW 12 (19 May 22) News in Brief

Anyone looking to deal with the GAIL director marketing will have to knock on the door of chairman Manoj Jain until the oil ministry appoints someone else.

GAIL's human resources department issued an order on April 29 (2022) signed by general manager Bharat Mehta saying that Jain had been assigned the additional charge of director marketing. "To ensure continuity of the company's business, the functions of director marketing are being looked after by the chairman and managing director from April 18 (2022) in his capacity as CMD until further instructions are received from the oil ministry," reads the order.

"The office of director marketing shall report to chairman and managing director and coordinate the functions of all groups/departments of marketing directorate, put up papers and files to the CMD." GAIL's business development director MV Iyer had earlier been given the additional charge of director marketing after the oil ministry suspended ES Ranganathan following his arrest on bribery charges on January 16 (2022).

Ranganathan allegedly misused his position to take bribes to give discounts to private companies buying petrochemical products from GAIL. Iyer stepped into Ranganathan's shoes on January 18 (2022) for three months until April 17 (2022).

"There is no directive from the ministry about extending Iyer's additional charge as marketing director," says a source. "Ideally, he (Iyer) should have continued with the additional responsibility of director marketing," we hear.

"Besides being chairman, Jain also holds additional charge of the director HR position." Jain will hold the HR director position until the formal appointment of Ayush Gupta after his selection by the PESB on May 9 (2022).
