Twenty-three ONGC officers are competing for the job to replace director onshore VP Mahawar who retires on February 28, 2018.

Of these five are executive directors, nine are group general managers and nine are general managers. Executive directors in Mumbai include AJ Morbale, charged with Neelam, Rajesh Kakkar in charge of Mumbai High and SK Moitra who heads Bassein.

Also in the race are HR chief Suresh Jandial and onshore engineering services chief Anand Mohan. Sanjeev Kakran, executive officer to former ONGC chairman DK Sarraf, is also competing despite lingering questions over his role when based at Tomsk in Siberia with Imperial Energy, an OVL acquisition.

Sunil Arora, who was executive officer to Sarraf's predecessor, Sudhir Vasudeva, has also applied for the position. Both Kakran and Arora were promoted to group general manager in May 2017.

"The PESB will shortlist a maximum eight candidates," reports an ONGC source. Other than managing onshore E&P, Mahawar also handles the Materials Management department.
