Mitra joins GSPC to help with KG block

Vol 16, PW 18 (04 Apr 13) News in Brief

GSPC needs all the help it can get to begin gas production from its offshore KG block KG-OSN-2001/3.

No surprise then that it hired former ONGC director offshore Niladri Kumar Mitra as its chief operating officer on March 26. “Mitra was brought in because of his offshore experience,” says a GSPC source.

"It's a desperate move." Some will remember Mitra left ONGC in a blaze of glory in February 2009 after successfully hiring nine helicopters from Global Vectra.

Before joining GSPC, Mitra worked for Reliance Industries as president (chief of technical services). He has 40 years oil and gas sector experience and was instrumental in bringing automation into offshore new technologies and redevelopment exercises at the Mumbai High and Heera and Neelam fields.

Mitra secured a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1972 from the Indian School of Mines University at Dhanbad in Jharkhand. Unconfirmed reports say he will earn Rs1.5cr ($270,000) annually at GSPC.
