The word is out that Shell Hazira managing director Nitin Shukla might be about to retire ahead of time.

Contacted by this report, 58-year old Shukla laughs off any suggestions that he’s about to step down early. “I still have another 16-17 months to go before I reach 60,” says Shukla.

Born on April 14, 1952 (a birthday he shares with the late Dr BR Ambedkar, iconic leader of India’s lower castes) Shukla says he has given no thought to his post-retirement plans. “I intend to keep myself busy,” he adds.

“My father-in-law is 94 years old and he still travels 35 minutes each day to get to office.” Shukla joined Shell in 2002 after three years as CEO of UK-based Powergen-owned Gujarat Paguthan Energy Corporation.

Before that he was with Torrent Power for seven years. In the eight years since joining Shell, gas consumption in Gujarat has increased by 500%, says Shukla.

“I have absolutely no doubt the future for LNG in India is bright,” he adds. “The real gas revolution is beginning right now.
