Qatargas supplied just 4% of the LNG imported to India over the last 12 months but that could change with the appointment of Rahul Deep Singh as the new CEO and managing director of Shell and Total joint venture Hazira LNG on October 1.

Before coming to Hazira LNG, Singh was the vice-president of Qatargas4 where Shell owns 30%. As Shell's representative, Singh was in charge of leading a team of seven at QatarGas4 and has a reputation as an expert negotiator for LNG deals, a skill which will come in useful at Hazira.

Will he choose to bring in more cargoes from Qatargas? Time will tell. Singh's first priority will be to ensure Hazira capacity is fully booked once key importer Reliance switches away from using gas in favour of coke gasification at the Jamnagar refinery.

When contacted, Singh, 42, emailed PETROWATCH that his top priority in the new role will be "safe and reliable operations at Hazira coupled with continued marketing success." Singh is no newcomer to Ahmedabad - he previously worked as a business analyst with Hazira LNG from August 2002 to March 2006. "I remember meeting Rahul almost 14 years ago," recalls a senior GSPC source.

"He was accompanying Nitin Shukla to Gandhinagar." Another LNG sector source remembers Rahul as "charming" and praises his expertise negotiating LNG deals.
