NK Mitra leaves ONGC under a cloud

Vol 12, PW 17 (29 Jan 09) News in Brief

Monday, February 2, will be a big day for Sudhir Vasudeva, 54, when he replaces NK Mitra as ONGC director offshore.

Mitra, on the other hand, will leave ONGC after more than 30 years, a relieved man. Relieved because an oil ministry inquiry against him over irregularities in the hiring of nine helicopters from Mumbai-based Global Vectra has mysteriously faded away.

“No one is talking about it anymore,â€‌ reveals a source. “Why don’t you also forget about itâ€‌ PETROWATCH, sadly, has the memory of an elephant and can’t forget a good tale! ONGC’s vigilance department, we hear, prepared a report for oil ministry director Maninder Singh alleging Mitra helped Global Vectra save millions of rupees by allowing it to park its choppers in ONGC hangars at Juhu in Mumbai.

Global Vectra confirms knowledge of the inquiry, as does a senior oil ministry source, describing it as a â€کsensitive’ matter, but declining to disclose details by phone. Mitra did not return a call seeking comment.
