Delhi waiting for invitation to join TAP pipeline

Vol 9, PW 23 (09 Mar 06) News in Brief

Delhi is waiting for a formal invitation to join the US-backed Turkmenistan to Pakistan gas pipeline project through Afghanistan (TAP).

Last month, an Indian oil ministry team travelled to Ashkabad in Turkmenistan to take up its observer status during talks between Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Once the formal invitation comes in we can ask cabinet for approval, says a source.

DeGolyer & MacNaughton made a presentation on gas reserves in Turkmenistan to the Indian team. Turkmenistans reserves in the Daulatabad and neighbouring fields is 2.3 trillion cubic metres, we hear.

These reserves are sufficient to meet demand from India and Pakistan. Turkmenistans export commitments to Russia and Ukraine are about 45m cm/d.

Initial demand from India is estimated at 60m cm/d and from Pakistan 40m cm/d. The Asian Development Bank is promoting TAP.
