Myanmar wants Indian companies to bid for offshore deepwater acreage in an imminent licensing round.

We understand the Myanmar energy minister Brigadier General Lun Thi extended the invitation to Indian companies on 6th July during his visit to Delhi. Its believed Myanmar plans to offer 13 new exploration blocks in this upcoming round, all of which lie to the north east of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in water depths of more than 1000 metres.

This is a new frontier area that Myanmar wants to begin exploring, reveals a source from Yangon. Indian companies will be welcome to join in.

Myanmar energy officials are busy securing approval from the countrys rulers before officially announcing the round. The blocks have been demarcated and data packages are being prepared, we learn.

Final government approval is awaited. In another three months time the bidding round should begin.
