Sanjeev Kakran in race for ONGC dir. HR post

Now we know why Sanjeev Kakran hasn't shown up to head the Jorhat asset, despite his appointment on July 1, 2017.

Kakran, a GGM, has ambitions to become ONGC's next director Human Resources, replacing DD Misra who retires June 30. Kakran and SSC Parthiban are among seven names ONGC sent to government recruiter PESB after receiving applications by March 8.

Still unclear is when interviews will be held. Kakran will be helped by his legendary networking skills which allowed him to seamlessly move from executive assistant to former ONGC chairman DK Sarraf to become chief executive assistant to present chairman Shashi Shanker.

"Kakran is from the 1985 batch of recruits (to ONGC)," says a colleague. "Others in his batch are still either chief engineers or deputy general managers but he has raced ahead to become a group general manager." Working against him however will be lingering controversy over his role at OVL's UK-listed Siberian explorer Imperial Energy, where Kakran was posted in December 2010.

Executive director Parthiban meanwhile looks after ONGC's corporate social responsibility activity. With this job come opportunities galore to network with oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other BJP politicians.

"He would naturally have built up a good rapport with his political bosses," says a source. Yet Parthiban also faces scrutiny over his involvement in the award of a 2015 catering services contract to Mumbai-based Saikripa Foods Services.
