OVL vacancy stokes up another controversy

Vol 17, PW 8 (14 Nov 13) People & Policy

Complaints are flying thick and fast in the hunt for OVL’s next director operations, which began on October 25.

ONGC's human resources department issued a circular on November 8 asking for CVs by December 17, ten days before the official PESB deadline on December 27. Some suspect ONGC wants to ‘pre-select’ candidates before applications are sent to the PESB.

"How can management do this" asks an angry ONGC source. "This circular is against PESB rules.

ONGC employees can take the company to court over this!" PESB rules say any candidate with the required qualifications or pay grade, irrespective of rank, is eligible. A senior source in ONGC's HR department in Delhi denied knowledge of the circular, though it is signed by Amitesh Pant, a deputy general manager HR in Dehradun.

ONGC employees suspect top bosses want to put forward only their choice. Likely contenders include AK Deshwal, OVL group general manager and head of exploration; AK Sachan, executive director and chief of ONGC's materials management department; Avinash Chandra, head of the deepwater drilling group; RK Gupta, chief of construction at OPaL; Kulbir Singh, general manager in the materials management department in Delhi; Subodh Kumar, head of engineering services at Ankleshwar; VP Mahawar, asset manager Tripura; PK Rao, asset manager Rajahmundry; Yash Malik, chief marketing; Rajesh Kakkar, GGM at Mumbai High; Sreedhar Vyas, general manager at OVL; and Sanjeev Kakran, general manager at Sibsagar in Assam.
