GAIL is finally about to get a new director business development, a post lying vacant for more than a year after the last selection process was scrapped.

PETROWATCH learns the PESB selected GAIL executive director and Mahanagar Gas managing director Rajeev Mathur as the next GAIL director business development on October 30. The last person to hold the post, S.

Venkatraman, retired in September 2014. “Appointing Mathur is likely to take one month,” reports a company source.

Accessible, friendly, and known to be a team player, Mathur, 54, is unlikely to face any vigilance concerns. Born on December 16, 1960, he joined GAIL in 1986.

“Mathur has spent most of his time in the marketing department,” says a colleague. “He has also spent time in the planning and business development departments.

" Mathur moved to Mumbai in September 2014 as head of gas retailer Mahanagar Gas. “Before that, he was heading gas marketing,” we hear.

He also has experience marketing petrochemicals from the company’s gas-based petrochemicals complex at Pata in Uttar Pradesh. With an MBA in marketing management, Mathur is described by colleagues as an LNG sourcing expert who is regularly invited to speak at industry forums.

He won the post by defeating GAIL executive directors PK Pal, PK Gupta, Gajendra Singh, Narendra Kumar, S. Narayanan, AK Singh, Manoj Jain and Sanjib Datta.
