GAIL executive director (marketing) Rajeev Mathur is tipped to replace director (business development) S.

Venkatraman who retires in September 2014. Other strong contenders include executive directors (project development) PK Pal, (business development) Sanjib Datta and (southern zone) AK Singh.

PETROWATCH learns GAIL recommended eight candidates to the PESB by November 25. “All eight are good candidates in their own right,” says a GAIL official.

“But for the business development job, what matters is knowledge of international gas markets and scouting for global deals. For that Mathur, Pal, and Datta are the best.

” Mathur, 53, has worked hard to convince GAIL customers to switch from other fuels to gas. He also has vast experience sourcing R-LNG and domestic gas.

Mathur is an engineer with an MBA specialising in marketing management. Pal, also 53, is a ‘people person’ and the most senior member of the BD team becoming ED in 2010.

Datta, an electrical engineer, is less senior, becoming ED only this year (2013). Singh, 53, is described as a "bright spark" who topped his B.

Tech and M. Tech courses.

He oversaw the 1389-km gas pipeline from Dabhol to Bangalore and is also charged with laying a proposed 1500-km gas pipeline from Surat to Paradip plus a 879-km R-LNG evacuation pipeline from Kochi to Bangalore.
