GAIL planning new dir. operations post

Vol 18, PW 11 (29 Jan 15) News in Brief

GAIL is planning to approve a proposal to create the new post of director operations and maintenance (O&M) at its board meeting scheduled for February 6, 2015.

PETROWATCH learns one of the items on the agenda is to set up a director operations post to improve safety following the devastating gas pipeline fire in Andhra Pradesh in June 2014. GAIL operates and maintains 10,972-km of gas pipelines and 2038-km of LPG pipelines.

“More than 60% of GAIL’s staff works in the O&M division so we need a person who can look after it exclusively,” says a source at the GAIL Officers Association. “Old pipelines are accident-prone and need a focused maintenance approach.

” But the association believes GAIL needs to restructure or get rid of redundant posts like director BD and director projects before creating a new post. “Many directors don’t have enough work,” says one source.

“There is hardly any new project right now for the director projects to handle.”
