WhatsApp shortlist for new ONGC dir. post

Vol 27, PW 11 (30 May 24) People & Policy

By early June 2024, expect the oil ministry to send out a formal shortlist of interview candidates for the new role of ONGC director of strategy and corporate affairs.

In the meantime, ONGC WhatsApp groups are already circulating a potential shortlist. A well-placed source believes this WhatsApp list will likely be similar to what the oil ministry eventually publishes.

Only three from ONGC are on the list: Ajay Ratan, ED and chief production JV assets and BD; Vinod Kumar Chaudhary, ED and Chief Infocom Officer (CIO); and Arunangshu Sarkar, a GGM. As CIO, Chaudhary oversees ONGC's information and communication systems across all locations.

His career includes roles in offshore and onshore operations, managing technology projects, drilling, IT, and information security. Sarkar is presently supervising Bassein & Satellite Asset operations off Mumbai.

Previously Sarkar was head corporate planning and strategy at ONGC in ONGC Videsh and handled all corporate planning and business development issues with the ministry. From IndianOil, four candidates are on the list: Sanjay Parashar, ED and chairman of IndianOil-Adani JV IndianOil Adani Ventures (IOAGPL); Suman Kumar, ED and head of E&P; Saurav Mitra, ED and in-charge of internal audit; and Nitin Kumar, CGM strategy.

Parashar was appointed MD of IndianOil Mauritius in April 2017 and held the post for four years. He unsuccessfully applied for IndianOil director HR in November 2023.

Mitra was Lanka IOC senior vice-president from 2013-2023. From GAIL, just one name is on the list: Sachchidanand Yadav, executive director of CBG.

A mechanical engineer, Yadav joined GAIL on June 18 (1991). From Engineers India, just one name is on the list: Snigdho Majumdar, ED and head of the BD team.

Majumdar is also responsible for corporate strategy and has experience in refinery project management, petrochemical plants, pipeline projects and offshore process platforms. In February 2023, ONGC announced that the yet-to-be-appointed director of strategy and corporate affairs would oversee eight departments: exploration JV Assets & BD; production JV Assets & BD; downstream petrochemicals; new energy; corporate strategy; corporate marketing; corporate legal; and finance support group.

Since then, ONGC has appointed heads of all eight departments.
