Cairn moves Rajasthan staff to Gurgaon

Vol 9, PW 2 (04 May 05) News in Brief

Cairn Energy is the latest multinational to move part of its operations to the high-tech satellite town of Gurgaon southwest of Delhi.

You cant run Rajasthan from Chennai, Cairn tells us. The flights to Rajasthan are much shorter from Delhi.

Cairn hopes to move its Rajasthan staff from Chennai to Gurgaon by the end of the year. Today the company has about 100 staff working on Rajasthan but this is likely to expand to 150 as operations intensify and first production begins in October 2007.

Weve made 11 discoveries but done only three appraisals, adds Cairn. We need another seven to eight appraisals and an Environmental Impact Assessment.

Our senior people need to be near Delhi. It makes more sense.

Another 150 Cairn staff at Chennai that oversee the Ravva asset and 70-odd that oversee its Cambay assets will remain in Chennai. Separately, Laurie Smyth, formerly with BP, has replaced Alan Linn as Cairns new managing director for India.
