Manmohan Singh calls crucial meeting on LNG

Concern over the price of LNG has reached the highest office of the Indian government.

This week (16th June at 5pm) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chairs a crucial meeting in his office on the pricing and availability of LNG for the power sector. Singhs joint secretary Jawed Usmani issued an urgent communiquأ© on 3rd June ordering the following cabinet ministers to attend: finance minister P Chidambaram, oil minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, power minister PM Sayeed, commerce minister Kamal Nath, shipping minister TR Baalu and Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

The prime minister has observed that availability of LNG at the appropriate price is essential for the growth of the power sector in the country, Usmani writes. By 10th June each minister was expected to have submitted to the PMO his views on LNG outlining the important and relevant issues, suggestions and action plans.
