Oil minister Mani Shankar Aiyars plans to relocate the HQ of ONGCs Cauvery asset to his home constituency of Mayiladuthurai has met with stiff opposition.

On 10th May, Prof M Ramadas, a Pondicherry MP, wrote to Aiyar requesting him not to move the office from his area. With the establishment of the headquarters office at Karaikal, ONGC has created enormous infrastructure in the form of stock yards, office complexes, roads, schools and townships, writes Ramadas.

This infrastructure has been created at the expense of the public exchequer and shifting this office to Mayiladuthurai would mean waste. Aiyar was quick to respond and replied to Ramadas stating that the proposal was merely being considered and that no decision has yet been taken.

The Karaikal Chamber of Commerce held a bandh (protest shutdown) on 12th May opposing Aiyars plan to move the ONGC office from Karaikal.
