OISD gives advance warning of آ“surpriseآ” checks

Vol 9, PW 14 (20 Oct 05) News in Brief

Most would agree that surprise safety checks are supposed to retain an element of, well, surprise.

But thats not how the Oil Industry Safety Directorate sees them. OISD officials routinely warn state oil company chairmen of the refineries and other facilities in their companies that will be subjected to surprise safety checks.

On 30th September, for instance, Indian Oil chairman Sarthak Behuria was informed that a two-member team from the OISD would conduct surprise checks at its refineries in Barauni, Guwahati and Haldia; Chennai Petroleums Nagapattinam refinery and at Bongaigaon refinery. The team members have been advised to send the recommendations to you, writes OISD executive director JB Verma.

A similar letter was sent the same day to ONGC chairman Subir Raha about surprise safety checks to be carried out at the Mangalore refinery and the companys Uran and Ankleshwar gas processing plants.
