Talks on to sell Nathpa Jhakri power plant

National Thermal Power Corporation is in talks to acquire a 1,500-MW hydel power project under construction in Himachel Pradesh.

An informed source tells Petrowatch talks are underway between the government and NTPC to acquire the plant (6x250-MW), whose construction is being carried out by the Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Power Company, a subsidiary of the Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation, which was incorporated on 24th May 1988 as a joint venture between the government of India and the state government of Haryana. A 1998 cost estimate by the Ministry of Power puts cost of construction at an estimated Rs7,666.31cr ($1.68bn).
