Within ONGC, candidates are lining up to replace CP Saha as regional director of ONGC (south), who steps down on December 31st this year.

This report learns Saha has applied for a promotion as executive director, even though he has less than two months to go. Internal speculation suggests he will get the promotion in recognition of "the good work" he has done at Chennai by putting the Krishna Godavari and Cauvery basins on the oil-producing map of India.

It is understood from a reliable source that top brass at ONGC want to reward him for this. But who will replace him at Chennai Many names have begun to pop up.

KK Jagati, regional director of ONGC (east) at Nazira in Assam was earlier touted as a replacement butthis report learns he won't get the job. Chotu Lal of Mehsana was also mentioned, but again, it does not look likely he will return to Chennai, where he worked earlier.

In the first week of November, three ONGC candidates from Chennai were interviewed in Delhi for Saha's job: CBP Saini, group general manager (production); B Chaudhuri, group general manager (finance and accounts); and surprisingly, IB Raina, group general manager (projects). Raina has been hotly tipped as the next operations director at ONGC because of his strong political connections.

His application for the RD post at Chennai is believed to be a precautionary measure in case his appointment to the board is blocked.
