NK Mitra will be new ONGC director onshore

Vol 7, PW 21 (14 Jan 04) News in Brief

NK Mitra and not AK Hazarika will be ONGC's director onshore in place of RC Gourh who retired on 31st December last year.

Hazarika was placed at number one by the Public Enterprises Selection Board and should have succeeded Gourh, but the Central Vigilance Commission has not cleared his name. Instead, the CVC cleared Mitra (number two on the PESB list) in late December.

But Mitra cant assume his new assignment immediately. Oil minister Ram Naik must first put his signature on Mitras file after which it will go to the Department of Personnel and Training.

Final stop: Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. How much time will all this take Between 15 days to six months.

Why six months Because with (general) elections likely soon, the political leadership will have more pressing issues to worry about. Mitra is presently Group General Manager surface management.
