More than half the candidates ONGC has forwarded to the PESB for the post of director technical and field services (T&FS) have a drilling background, confirming speculation senior management wants a driller to clinch this sought after position.

Last week ONGC forwarded the names of 17 eligible candidates to the PESB which will begin further whittling them down to the final shortlist for interviews. Nine names are drillers: executive director Anurag Sharma; group general managers SK Shrivastava, Tarun Malik, RK Sharma and OP Singh; chief general managers V Venkateshwara Prasad, Ajay Sharma and RK Hangotra; general manager Atul Singh.

If past precedent is anything to go by the PESB will select someone with an extensive drilling background who as director T&FS can master the intricate details of rig hire and allied services contracts. NC Pandey, in the post since October 29, 2018, and who retires on March 31, 2020, is a driller.

So too was Shashi Shanker who held the post before he became chairman. Of the drillers recommended to the PESB, the most senior is Anurag Sharma, promoted to executive director rank in April 2019.

"Shrivastava is also technically sound," says a source. "OP Singh and Tarun Malik are also strong candidates."

Ajay Sharma is said to be a "competent driller" who is "learning the rules of the game" under the guidance of NC Pandey. "Sharma is posted in Pandey's office," adds our source.
