More than 20 candidates from ONGC have applied for the post of director offshore to replace NK Mitra when he retires on February 1 next year.

PETROWATCH learns by March 31 a total of 24 candidates from ONGC had submitted their CVs to the Delhi office of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB). Nine applicants hold executive director rank, eleven are group general managers and four are general managers.

“Internal candidates (from ONGC) can send in their CV’s even one day before the interview and they will be accepted,â€‌ reveals a source. “CVs are still coming in.

â€‌ The nine executive directors are: Sudhir Vasudeva, PK Borthakur, Apurba Saha, SR Athawale, Anil Johri, MD Joshi, AA Khan and AK Gupta. S.

Roychaudhury from ONGC Videsh has also applied. Group general managers applying for Mitra’s job are: K.

Anjaneyulu, AK Sood, US Deshmukh, AK Jain, Ashok Verma, VK Ramesh, JT Mahavar, BS Momi, PK Ghosh, KS Jamestin and AK Mishra. Lower ranking general managers to apply are: Dr.

Vinod Sharma, S. Dutta, Dayawant and AK Srivastava.

Company insiders have already started mentioning three names as frontrunners to succeed Mitra. “Vasudeva, PK Ghosh and AK Sood have the most experience,â€‌ we hear.

“All of them are on the production side (production engineers) and have also worked offshore. Most of the others are only drillers.

They do not have much experience in production and have not spent much time offshore.â€‌ Insiders predict the real fight to replace Mitra will be between Vasudeva and Ghosh.

PESB sources tell us the shortlist for interviews will be prepared by May this year. Mitra took over as ONGC director offshore from VK Sharma on May 28, 2004, the day Sharma retired.

Mitra’s formal tenure began on September 9, 2004.
