GSPC chief Atanu to lead NTPC

Vol 19, PW 2 (24 Sep 15) News in Brief

GSPC managing director Atanu Chakraborty is believed to have been selected by a search committee to be the next chairman and managing director of state-owned NTPC.

“Atanu has been selected as he is perfect for the job,” says a senior Gandhinagar source. “Only a formal announcement has yet to be made.

” If the rumours are true, then Chakraborty will step into the role vacated by Arup Roy Choudhury on August 31. Choudhury’s five-year term was not extended until his retirement in December 2016 by the Narendra Modi government, ostensibly because of his links to the previous UPA government.

Chakraborty’s selection by a special search committee set up by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet is yet another example of the Modi government skipping a transparent interview process. Chakraborty is said to have been selected as he is a bureaucrat with an engineering degree – the background desired by PESB chairman Ajit Seth.
