Talukdar won't get extension

Vol 18, PW 19 (21 May 15) News in Brief

Sometimes we get it wrong and on this occasion we did.

Contrary to expectations BN Talukdar won't be getting a second six-month extension as DGH chief beyond June 30 this year (2015). Oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan has overturned a decision by former oil secretary Saurabh Chandra to extend Talukdar's stay to end-December.

Before stepping down Chandra had signed the file recommending Talukdar's extension and only Pradhan’s signature was needed. “Chandra wanted Talukdar to get the extension,” says an oil ministry source.

“But Pradhan didn't want it and was waiting for Chandra to retire. Pradhan deliberately did not send Talukdar’s file to the ACC for approval.

” After Chandra retired on April 30 Pradhan promptly asked new secretary Kapil Dev Tripathi to prepare a job description for a new DGH chief. “Expect an advertisement in early June,” says a source.

Talukdar already won an unprecedented extension from December 2014 when he was scheduled to retire. Some predict he will be replaced by an IAS bureaucrat trusted by prime minister Narendra Modi.
