Cairn employees complain there is too much favouritism within the organisation towards people from West Bengal.

But such life-threatening concerns were far from the minds of company top bosses who hosted a Diwali party on October 20 at the Delhi Golf Club for senior oil ministry officials and ONGC, Cairn’s partner at the RJ-ON-90/1 producing bock in Rajasthan. "The oil minister and secretary were invited but didn’t come," says a source who attended.

Cairn chairman Navin Agarwal, DGH boss BN Talukdar, Cairn India acting CEO Sudhir Mathur and ONGC chairman DK Sarraf lit a ceremonial lamp. "People enjoyed drinks and snacks over a performance by Tamana, a non-profit NGO working for the mentally challenged," we hear.

ONGC director onshore Ashok Varma, director offshore TK Sengupta and OVL managing director NK Verma also attended. On October 21, Cairn announced the appointment of Mayank Ashar as full-time MD and CEO with effect from November 17.
