Hunt begins for new EIL chairman

Vol 17, PW 20 (22 May 14) News in Brief

Oil ministry officials have asked the PESB to begin looking for a replacement for Engineers India (EIL) chairman AK Purwaha who retires in May next year (2015) after more than five years at the helm.

Purwaha increased the company’s turnover last year to Rs2505cr ($425m) - up more than 60% from when he took over on October 1, 2009. The PESB will advertise the post in June.

Some speculate EIL director (commercial) Sanjay Gupta has a good chance of winning. “Gupta is the most senior director eligible to apply,” says an EIL source.

“He is credited with winning the Nigerian EPCM contract for the $9bn Dangote refinery and petrochemical complex.” Gupta can expect tough competition from executive director Ashwani Soni, already selected to become EIL director projects from September this year.

EIL executive directors UV Lakhane, LK Vijh, SD Kherdekar, VK Malhotra, JC Nakra and VC Bhandari are also expected to apply for the post.
