As expected executive director Ashwani Soni is set to take over as director projects at state-owned civil engineering firm Engineers India (EIL), replacing Deepak Moudgil who retires on August 30.

Soni beat 11 other candidates, seven from EIL, to win the job after PESB interviews on February 14. Born on December 16, 1956, Soni was chosen over EIL executive directors UV Lakhane, LK Vijh, SD Kherdekar, VK Malhotra, JC Nakra, VC Bhandari, and general manager Rajnish Mahajan.

Others in the race included GAIL executive director S. Narayanan and NTPC's KS Garbyal.

Soni is currently handling the $2.3bn expansion of Bharat Petroleum’s Kochi refinery, the construction of GSPC’s onshore gas terminal at Kakinada and the captive power plant and south jetty pipeline at IndianOil’s Paradip refinery in Orissa. Soni is also overseeing Gujarat State Petronet's two cross-country gas pipelines: from Mehsana to Bhatinda and from Mallavaram to Bhilwara.
