ONGC director exploration

SV Rao and PK Bhowmick are tipped as frontrunners for the post of ONGC director exploration to replace DK Pande, who steps down on January 31, 2011.

PETROWATCH learns 10 candidates sent in CVs by the July 26 deadline for this prestigious post, first advertised on May 26. External candidates are Jaganathan Rao of HPCL and Swantra Kumar of hydro-power company NHPC.

Internal candidates are Dr. Teluram Varun, JG Chaturvedi, PB Pandey, Vinod Sharma, Dr.

BS Josyulu, NK Verma, PK Bhowmick and SV Rao. “Bhowmick is a scientist who knows all the basins in India like the back of his hand,” says an observer.

“I’ve noticed he has become close to (current director exploration) Pande these last two months.” But he adds Rao is considered Pande’s favourite and is equally qualified, as well as being a hard worker.

“Rao has good people skills,” we hear. “He might have an edge because he has been head of all three ONGC exploration directorates.
