GdF targets India for growth

Vol 11, PW 19 (07 Feb 08) News in Brief

Gaz de France wants to widen its presence in India.

“Nothing is excluded,â€‌ learns PETROWATCH. “Even exploration and production, or City Gas Distribution.

â€‌ Until now GdF has maintained a low-key presence in India, satisfied with its 10% stake in Petronet-LNG, and responsibility for O&M at Dahej. Expect that to change.

In October last year GdF appointed India-veteran and Petronet-LNG director Jacques Gautier to head its international division, with a mandate for growth. Will GdF participate in NELP-VII “GdF needs to understand the geology of India before it can participate,â€‌ adds a source.

“The deadline for bids is too early.â€‌ GdF is best known as Europe’s biggest gas transmission operator, but it also drills wells: in January 2007, it became operator for the first time: in the North Sea.

What of CGD in India “GdF needs to find a good partner,â€‌ we hear. “Among PSUs it has good relationships with GAIL, Indian Oil and Petronet-LNG – but it hasn’t excluded partnering others.
