Discoverer spuds another ONGC well

Transocean deepwater drillship Discoverer Seven Seas has begun drilling another well for ONGC.

This well is on eastern offshore Mahanadi basin NELP-I block MN-DWN-98/3. Well A-1 is the first on this block and was spud on 28th March in 1100 metres water depth and has been set a TD of 2465 metres.

Says an industry source: “The conductor casing has just been set and mud is being circulated.â€‌ ONGC is hoping for a hydrocarbon discovery at this well, in line with other recent finds in the Mahanadi basin.

By the end of this month Discoverer Seven Seas will be the only charter-hired deepwater rig with ONGC after Belford Dolphin is de-mobilised. When DSS was hired many faulted the choice of what was described as, “an ageing, leaky boatâ€‌.

Despite several mishaps, Discoverer Seven Seas has made more discoveries for ONGC than the ultra-modern Belford Dolphin. Discoverer’s contract ended in February this year, but ONGC has re-hired her for another three years.
