Ex-GAIL Rao to join Reliance Industries

Vol 10, PW 17 (14 Dec 06) News in Brief

GAILs former director projects SP Rao is set to join Reliance Industries as a senior gas advisor.

Unclear is if Rao will be based in Delhi or Mumbai. Efforts made by this report to contact Rao came to nothing.

PETROWATCH learns Rao last month asked the oil ministry for formal clearance before joining Reliance. Government rules discourage directors of state-owned companies from joining the private sector for up to two years after retirement.

On 3rd December, the oil ministry wrote to the heads of all state-owned oil companies on Raos behalf seeking their consent by 20th December. On 27th August, Rao took over additional charge as GAILs acting chairman to replace Proshanto Banerjee.

Raos claim to fame was a case he filed against Banerjee alleging caste discrimination over his application for the post of MD at Petronet-LNG. Indias anti-discrimination watchdog, National Commission for Scheduled Castes, supports Rao and the next court hearing is in January 2007.
