ONGC is planning to drill more Coal Bed Methane wells in 2006-07 at Bokaro and North Karanpura in the state of Jharkand two blocks it won in the first CBM bidding round.

ONGC is in Phase-II of its exploration period on both blocks after it successfully applied for and won a six-month extension to Phase-I on each block from the DGH. Phase-II at both blocks began on 21st August 2005 and will end on 20th February 2009.

During Phase-II, ONGC is committed to drilling 12 pilot wells at Bokaro (BK-CBM-2001/1). By 14th September, we understand ONGC had released drilling locations for 10 pilot wells.

In addition, it released locations for two exploratory wells carried over from Phase-I. Says a source: ONGC has already begun work to acquire the land required for these wells.

In 2006-07, we learn, ONGC plans to drill two additional boreholes and carry out extended testing of two carry forward exploratory wells. Also on the agenda are geological and geophysical studies and release of locations for all pilot wells.

At North Karanpura (NK-CBM-2001/1) ONGCs commitment is six pilot wells. Till 14th September, we understand, four pilot wells were being firmed up on generation of test data of two exploratory wells carried forward to Phase-II.

By March 2007, plans are to drill one alternate borehole, and carry out extended testing of two carry forward exploratory wells. In addition, expect geological and geophysical studies and firming up of locations for all pilot wells at North Karanpura.

All the Phase-II work at Bokaro and North Karanpura has been awarded to a consortium of Express Drilling, Shiv Vani and MECL as an integrated turnkey contract.
