Vol 3, PW 8 (12 May 99) News in Brief

Local activists have condemned a proposal to develop the Maroli port at Umargaon on the southern coast of Gujarat, saying it will uproot around 3,000 people and destroy shallow water fishing for local villagers.

At a press conference in Mumbai on 10 May the Kinara Bachao Sangarsh Samithi movement called on the Gujarat government to abort plans to develop Maroli into a modern port with 18 jetties and the capability of handling LNG imports. In September 1998, a consortium of Unocal, Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation and the National Telecom of India (NATELCO) won approval to develop Maroli in a joint venture with the Gujarat Maritime Board.
