GAIL and ONGC have new chairman

Vol 10, PW 10 (07 Sep 06) News in Brief

GAIL and ONGC have new chairmen: a temporary one at GAIL and an unconfirmed one at ONGC.

On 27th August, GAIL announced that director operations SP Rao, the senior most full-time director had assumed additional charge of CMD following the governments refusal to extend Proshanto Banerjees term two days earlier. RS Sharmas appointment as CMD of ONGC has yet to be officially confirmed but it is widely believed he emerged first choice after interviews at the Public Enterprises Selection Board on 30th August before a three-member panel of oil secretary MS Srinivasan, PESB chairman NK Sinha and PESB secretary R Datta.

Anti-corruption authorities must still vet Sharmas file before it goes to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and then to the PMO from where it will be rubber-stamped by the rocket scientist Father of Indias nuclear bomb: President Abdul Kalam. DGH boss VK Sibal and OVL MD RS Butola were notably absent from the PESB interviews.
