Vol 12, PW 10 (02 Oct 08) News in Brief

Two private sector candidates have applied to replace UD Choubey as GAIL chairman from July next year.

Amitabh Basu, a director at Kabul Bank, based in the Afghan capital, and Ashok Shukla, CEO of SPA Associates, have applied for the post under new rules that allow state-owned firms to hire private sector managers. But missing from the list of eight CVs received by September 26 at the Public Enterprises Selection Board are GAIL favourites AK Purwaha, director business development, and BC Tripathi, director marketing.

Three of the other six candidates are from state-owned firms: AV Kamat, chairman of Hindustan Machine Tools, AK Srivastava, chairman of the Cement Corporation of India, and VM Kaul, an executive director with Power Grid Corporation. The other three candidates are from the oil sector: UN Bose, director (technical and field services) at ONGC; JG Chaturvedi, executive director of ONGC’s Assam Asset; and RK Singh, BPCL director refineries.
