Junior oil minister Etienne Ponnuswamy has inaugurated a new seismic data processing centre at ONGC's regional headquarters in Chennai.

Officials at ONGC said the new processing centre, which was unveiled on July 15th, cost Rs10cr ($2.3m) and is the most advanced of its kind in India. SK Sharma, Group General Manager (Exploration), SRBC, told Business Line that foreign companies will be able to benefit from the facilities in approximately 12 months time when ONGC clears a backlog of unprocessed data from recent discoveries in its southern region.

Sharma said the new processing facility works 10 times faster than ONGC's earlier facility in Chennai.
