India hopes to generate up to 10,000-MW of power through non-conventional energy sources by 2012.

Minister of state for non-conventional energy sources M Kannappan told parliament last week that his ministry has prepared a draft renewable energy policy statement whose, objective is to enhance the contribution of solar, wind, biomass and small hydro by meeting minimum rural energy needs and providing decentralised off-grid supply for agriculture, industry, commercial and household sectors in rural and urban areas. Kannappan said only 1.74% (or 1,700-MW) of installed capacity in India is generated by renewable energy sources.
