A central 'Gas Act' to rival the one in Gujarat

Vol 4, PW 18 (11 Oct 00) News in Brief

An unconfirmed report from Delhi reveals that the oil ministry is preparing a draft 'Gas Act' to regulate the transmission and distribution of natural gas across the country.

If true, the act would rival a similar draft under preparation by the state government of Gujarat. A report in the 3rd October issue of Asian Age newspaper said the act would allow "third party producers of gas" to access existing and future pipelines "if space is available," effectively ending Gas Authority of India's monopoly.

An independent regulator with powers to set charges is also envisaged. According to the report, the draft 'Gas Act' will be submitted to the Indian cabinet for approval by the end of this year.
