Delay in Niko 'v' Gujarat Petroleum court battle

Vol 4, PW 18 (11 Oct 00) News in Brief

Proceedings in a landmark arbitration case between Niko Industries of Canada and Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation have been put back to 16th October.

The case was to resume on 9th October but the court was told that Justice SK Mahajan, hearing the matter, has taken one week's leave. Counsel for Niko is Palaniappan Chidambaram, a high profile (free-market) former Indian finance minister.

Counsel for Gujarat Petroleum is Mukul Rohatagi, an Additional Solicitor General. At issue is the right of Gujarat Petroleum to revoke Niko's equity participation in a gas pipeline from the Hazira gasfield where both companies are partners.
