President Kalam visits Myanmar in March

Vol 9, PW 22 (23 Feb 06) News in Brief

Business with Myanmar should get a boost when head of state President APJ Abdul Kalam visits Yangon from 8th to 10th March.

This will be the first visit to Myanmar by the President of India, confirms an official. The President of Myanmar was here last year and he invited President Kalam to make a return visit.

Its not clear who will be included in the Presidents delegation to Myanmar. Details are being worked out, we are told.

Broadly, the visit seeks to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Myanmar but the main focus will be energy cooperation. GAIL and ONGC Videsh together have 30% participating interests in each of two offshore Myanmar blocks A-1 and A-3.

Private sector Essar was last year awarded two exploration blocks: one offshore and one onshore. Under consideration are plans to lay a gas pipeline from block A-1 to India.
