Oldest refinery in India 'Digboi' set for 'Shut-Down'

Vol 5, PW 2 (14 Mar 01) News in Brief

India's oldest refinery at Digboi in Assam might have to close down because it continues to pollute the environment in defiance of orders from local authorities.

Lakhinandan Bora ofthe Assam Pollution Control Board tells newspapers he has served 14 notices since November 1999, asking the Indian Oil Corporation controlled refinery not to violate pollution norms. Bora said that Digboi has not responded to any of the notices and that this has forced him to send the refinery a 'Shut Down' notice.

Bora accuses Digboi of releasing highly toxic substances - including oil and grease - into nearby streams causing extensive damage to the environment.
