Shell overcomes hurdles for clearance at Hazira

Vol 5, PW 4 (11 Apr 01) News in Brief

After much headache, Shell has received environmental clearance from the Indian Ministry of Environment & Forests for its 5m t/y LNG terminal at Hazira in Gujarat.

In a press release issued 10th April, Shell said its Hazira project is now "proceeding rapidly and to schedule." Shell executives complain in private that the Ministry of Environment put innumerable obstacles in its way when seeking environmental clearance for Hazira. These hurdles, claims Shell, were not imposed on its closest rival Petronet-LNG.

Delivery of Shell's two 135,000 cubic metre LNG carriers from Mitsubishi is on track for September 2002 and January 2003 respectively, said the company.
