Vol 27, PW 18 (05 Sep 24) News in Brief

Sanjay Sharma has taken charge as MD of north Gujarat gas retailer Sabarmati Gas.

On September 1 (2024), Sharma replaced former managing director Atul Kumar at the GSPC and Bharat Petroleum joint venture. On September 2 (2024), Sharma sent an email to employees, saying: "I have reported on August 1 (2024) and taken over as MD Sabarmati Gas effective September 1 (2024)."

When called, Sharma said: "Thank you so much; I took charge and have come back (from Gandhinagar, where Sabarmati is based) to Pune to pack my things." Before joining Sabarmati, Sharma was director commercial at Maharashtra Natural Gas (MNGL) based in Pune.

He has over 30 years of oil and gas experience, covering LPG and retail operations and marketing. Sharma started his career with BPCL in 1991.

Over three decades, he has seen significant changes at BPCL, including the successful implementation of government schemes Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY - free LPG connections to women from poor households) and Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY - free food grains for people in poverty). Before becoming MNGL director commercial, Sharma was BPCL state head (LPG) Odisha and Jharkhand.

Sabarmati has connected more than 300,000 homes and 1550 businesses and factories with piped gas and operates 161 CNG stations: 93 online; two are L-CNG stations, and 66 are daughter booster/daughter stations. GSPC managing director Milind Torawane is Sabarmati Gas chairman.

"Sabarmati's chairman is always from GSPC, while the MD post is always BPCL," says a company source. Sabarmati supplies gas to Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Patan and Mehsana.
