Vartika Shukla is new CMD of EIL

Just weeks after her appointment, the PESB's new chairman Mallika Srinivasan has recommended another woman as the head of Engineers India (EIL): Vartika Shukla.

The PESB recommended Shukla's name on April 23 during its first meeting this year, after Srinivasan was appointed on April 1. Shukla, who has been EIL director technical since August 1 (2020), beat seven others to win the job.

Accepting congratulations from this report, she said she would "be happy" to speak about her vision for EIL, but only after confirmation of her appointment. "I would request you to wait until the formal clearances come and the appointment letter is issued," she said.

Shukla is a chemical engineer from IIT Kanpur and joined EIL in July 1988 as a management trainee. Still unclear is when Narendra Modi will confirm her appointment.

Other EIL candidates interviewed for the job were its director human resources Ashok Kumar Kalra, and executive directors John Paul Valiyapunam, Jayati Ghosh, Rajeev Gupta and Sunil Kumar Saxena. Also in the race were Rail Vikas Nigam, executive director Mrituiniay Pratap Singh and commerce department additional secretary Sanjay Chadha.

EIL director commercial Rakesh Kumar Sabharwal took charge as interim CMD on February 1 (2021) after JC Nakra retired the previous day.
