Driller Deshraj new ONGC Ahmedabad chief

Vol 23, PW 2 (14 Nov 19) News in Brief

Rome wasn't built in a day, they say, because not much can be achieved in a day and frankly not much more can be achieved in two months when it comes to major projects.

Yet two months is all the time Deshraj will get as the new executive director and head of ONGC's Ahmedabad asset after taking charge on November 1. Deshraj replaced Debasis Basu who retired on October 31.

"But Deshraj also retires on December 31," says an ONGC source tells us who adds ONGC is already looking for Deshraj's replacement. "Perhaps he will create a new record of being the asset manager for the shortest time?" we hear.

Deshraj is a mechanical engineer by training who graduated from Delhi's GB Pant Engineering College in 1981 and later joined ONGC. After several drilling assignments Deshraj took over as general manager drilling at ONGC Ahmedabad in October 2013.

"He has led many successful drilling campaigns," says our source. "And he's a hands-on driller."

But a senior ONGC source acknowledges: "I don't know what anybody can do in 60 days." Deshraj's predecessor Basu was a petroleum engineer while Basu's predecessor PK Mishra was a driller.
